Chris Brown has made it official, announcing the release date for his forthcoming sixth studio album, X. The project serves as the followup to his 2012 release, Fortune. Despite not being a critic favorite, the album was nominated for Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards.
X, preceded by the lead single “Fine China,” will arrive in stores on Tuesday, July 16th. To date, the single has peaked at No. 51 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 12 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart with sales inching towards 110,000 copies.
Accompanying the announcement of the album’s release date is a new ballad penned by Chris titled, “I Can’t Win.” On the heartfelt track Chris sings, “Don’t even matter if you scream and yell/Girl you don’t love me, you don’t love yourself/ But it don’t matter if you’re raising hell/ I miss you, I wanna kiss you (yeah).”
According to Chris, however, “I Can’t Win” will not appear on X. “Some shit I felt like writing that’s not on the album,” he tweeted.
While I think that Chris is rushing a little too fast with his album releases (three albums in three years), I like the direction this project is going in so far. Hopefully he’s finally letting go of the negativity, Auto-Tune and the generic dance music formula that resulted in the disappointment of Fortune.
Here’s a toast to better music and growth!
